Inspiration

Interdependence is a central concept to all levels of life and has been one of the leading sources of inspiration for Dr. Brimm’s work.

Biological Sciences

Her first book, Wiring, focuses on the powerful survival traits influencing every day life. Dr. Brimm’s research includes scholars from the sciences, including Michael Ghiglieri and his writings on the origins of male violence. Psychologist, Eugene Monick, and his attention to the common phenomenon of male rage – the effect Monick says, is the result of psychological castration.
In the exercise portion of each chapter, neuroscience is both inspirational and valuable in our capacity to ‘step over old wirings.’ Neuroscience creates, for both men and women, the shift from unconscious survival responses to aware choice. Rick Hanson and Dawson Church are important contributors to this important field of study.

Psychology

Jungian-based psychology played an important role in answering Dr. Brimm’s fundamental question, “What else is going on?” Depth psychology aims to create a better understanding of one’s self that includes our biological traits and motivations. Dr. Brimm has been strongly influenced by Carl Jung’s genius and the impact of archetypes. Mythology expresses these universal qualities or archetypes. Robert A. Johnson’s ideas of the female and male psyche were also great sources of inspiration, along with works by Jean Shinoda Bolen and Ginette Paris who wrote on Greek gods and goddesses. Mythology is abundant with deep complexities and provides a way to better understand our behaviors and motivations.

Poets

Poetry offers Dr. Brimm a portal to the invisible world of meaning, connection and awe. It is an art form that brings balance to the science-minded and the routines of daily life. Mary Oliver’s poetry gifts us with an intimate connection to our beloved wild nature. David Whyte, with a background in biology has the capacity to touch the psyche deeply with his insight. A bit of time with poetry will surely refresh your soul.
